The Lake Management Committee is working diligently to identify and contain Eurasian Watermilfoil (EWM) in the lake. Our Aquatic Plant Management (APM) Plan for 2024 through 2028 provides the framework for all management activities using an Integrated Pest Management philosophy.
In 2026, Gilmore Lake Association (GLA) was awarded two grants for both control of EWM and education about how to identify and prevent aquatic invasive species. The grant projects will be implemented in 2026 and 2027. The project activities include the following:
- Surveys to identify and locate EWM growth
- DNA sampling to determine the EWM strains and receptivity to herbicide control
- Herbicide treatment with 2,4-D
- Diver removal and Diver Assisted Suction Harvesting (DASH) of EWM plants
- Education for area residents on identification and hand-harvesting of EWM
EWM is treated by commercial application of herbicide in early summer. It is not toxic to most other aquatic plants and poses no hazard to humans and animals. If you think you have spotted EWM, contact us at info@gilmorelakeassociation.com.
GLA installed buoys in the northern basin to mark the edge of a large EWM bed in order to make boaters aware of the presence of EWM and discourage motorboat traffic beyond the buoys.
GLA participates in the Minong Town-wide Clean Boats Clean Waters (CBCW) boat inspection program, which covers several Minong Township lakes, including Gilmore. The program inspected hundreds of boats during past seasons. In 2026, inspections will be conducted on weekends from 7am to 2:30pm. The CBCW program is organized by the Minong Area Lakes Alliance (MALA) and is funded by area lakes and the Wisconsin DNR.
To volunteer and help fight EWM in Gilmore Lake or learn to identify EWM and other invasive species (zebra mussels could be next) please email info@gilmorelakeassociation.com.
